A Mississippi native, two-time HBCU graduate, and proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Dr. Canisha has built her career around clinical excellence, innovation, and the art of creating beautiful, healthy smiles.
Her academic journey began at THEE Jackson State University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology, followed by a Master of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She later fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a dentist, earning her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from Meharry Medical College and completing her Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
With a passion for comprehensive and cosmetic dentistry, as well as facial aesthetics, Dr. Canisha continues to advance her expertise through specialized training in laser dentistry and advanced cosmetic techniques. She is an active member of the American Academy of Facial Esthetics and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

Dr. Charlie Spell III, DDS, is a Memphis dentist whose career combines dental care, entrepreneurship and a lasting connection to Winston-Salem State University. He completed his undergraduate education at WSSU and earned his DDS from Meharry Medical College in 1992. BBB dates Heart Smiles’ business history to February 1995, reflecting more than three decades serving Memphis.
His practice provides general, cosmetic and family dentistry, including porcelain veneers, implants, crowns and bridges. Its website also describes preventive and restorative services and CEREC technology for digital impressions and eligible single-visit ceramic restorations. Before dentistry, Dr. Spell was a WSSU basketball standout: a starting point guard for three seasons, an All-American and All-CIAA honoree in 1986–87 and 1987–88, a two-season team captain and senior-year MVP. He was named to WSSU’s 2026 Clarence E. “Big House” Gaines Athletic Hall of Fame class.
He co-authored the children’s book Basket Ball to Dentist with Robert Carpenter in 2021. Its published description shares his journey from basketball to dentistry and describes a scholarship fund supporting WSSU athletics, alongside plans to direct a portion of book proceeds to the athletic department.
